Cyber Security Summit
June 10, 2015 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Barack Obama, the president of the United States, said last week: “Cyberthreats pose one of the most serious economic and national security challenges to the United States.” Obama made his comments as he announced an executive order to provide for sanctions against hackers. The US’s move came as the number of malicious cyberattacks is increasing.
In the European Union, France’s TV5 Monde television channel was hacked by militants from ISIS who took control of the station’s website for several hours.
EU governments, with a few notable exceptions, have been slow to take action to tackle cybercrime despite the growing problem. Lawmakers are working on legislation to coordinate responses to cyberattacks.
In the corporate sector, cybercriminals prowl for customer data and passwords. The cost of these attacks is rising. A breach involving customer credit card details at Target, a US retailer, is reported to have cost the company $162 million. With critical infrastructure such as energy networks dependent on software to operate, cyberattacks could inflict huge economic damage and cause substantial loss of life.
POLITICO’s first cybersecurity summit, sponsored by Microsoft, will assess the threats to cybersecurity and provide a platform to debate the solutions.
Topics to be discussed include:
• Trends in cyber security: tough challenges, smart responses
• De-escalating the cyber arms race: the role of norms
• Cyber-threats and cyber-response: who’s getting it right?
• Big data and the internet of things: tools to tackle the cyber security challenge?
